Trials and Tribulations of This Summer

Although last week brought more of the same - yup, hot and dry - by Friday we at least had the first cloud cover that we've seen in weeks. The rain predicted for Friday, Saturday and Sunday didn't amount to much, and we're still very much feeling the effects of the drought that 99% of Massachusetts is experiencing.  It's not just that
we're moving our irrigation systems constantly, which has accounted for many, many labor hours this year, but that it has been impossible to get a buildup of soil moisture.  The depth of dryness is so extensive, the soil particles are so desiccated and the air has been so hot that the tension between getting water on as many crops as possible over the course of a week and having water on crops long enough to really soak them has been one we can't ease.   Lack of water leads to stressed crops which in turn makes them more susceptible to pests and disease.  We're seeing this effect heavily in our spring planted kale and collards, which are staples of the CSA distribution and our Outreach Market.  It used to be that flea beetle pressure would be high in the spring but by the time we were putting fall brassicas in the ground in mid-July, pressure would be low enough to not affect them too much.  There would be a perfect lull in the population and when the second generation appeared briefly in the hot days of August, the plants would be established enough to fend them off and be less appealing to the pest.  This summer is the worst pressure I've seen of the beetle, and our newly planted cabbages, kale, collards, broccoli, cauliflower, and especially Napa have already needed a spraying of the few approved controls we're able to use in organic production.  We seem to be in the midst of a population boom with the second generation coming on earlier than ever.

For the first time ever, we've decided to use row cover on a few beds of July planted Napa seedlings, a control method we usually reserve for the cooler weather afforded by the spring.  We've had to spray our spring planting multiple times and I was surprised and disappointed to see our purple kale practically black with flea beetles last week.  And despite getting the irrigation going on them at least weekly, the plants seem to have stopped growing altogether in the droughty heat wave.  There have been many hours spent weeding, feeding and watering our earlier planting of kale and collards and I am hoping that they'll pull through the next month to bridge the gap to the new planting.  But if the flea beetle pressure on them continues to be too strong to contain then we'll have to make the tough decision to mow it early in order to ensure the health of our fall crops.  As for now, we're taking a break from harvesting both kale and collards with the hope that a little more tending will get them back on track.

One of the other big challenges the drought has presented has been with our direct seeded crops.  Most of what we grow is started in the greenhouse and transplanted out into the fields as seedlings.  A few crops, namely carrots, dill, cilantro and beans, are seeded multiple times throughout the season directly in ground.  Usually just a little soil moisture is enough to get these guys germinated and popping through the soil, either ahead of or neck and neck with the plentiful weed seeds in our fields.   This year we're struggling with all in-field germination, which has been erratic, unreliable and sometimes just not there.  The weeds, however, are as opportunistic as ever, and the irrigation that we're putting on our direct seeded beds has frustratingly been enough to encourage weed germination but not our crops.  When this happens, it becomes extremely difficult to cultivate or even hand weed the beds.  A flush of weeds grows rapidly, and if we've got our cilantro or carrots coming up a week later at best, and another week or so before the crops are established enough to actually weed around, then we end up in quite a pickle.  At that point, the weeds are so well rooted that it becomes even more disruptive to pull them out and increases the likelihood of pulling out the small, tender, just barely there crop.  On top of that, the soil is probably pretty dry, because we probably have the irrigation going on the newly planted lettuce that we're trying to keep alive in the 95 degree heat.  Weeding small crops in these hot and dry conditions can actually disrupt the plants to create more harm than good.  My hope here is that you can start to understand why the beans, dill and cilantro you may be picking in the next couple weeks are such a hairy jungle.  Luckily, the cherry and plum tomatoes have strong fruit sets and we're starting to see some more consistent ripening with them.  We're getting water on the tomatillos and husk cherries as much as we can and hoping to see them, along with the chiles, come on in the next few weeks.


 It's tough to keep energy and attitude from faltering in the kind of weather we've had this season.The past few weeks in particular have been so hot and trying that it's demanded a real commitment to community and camaraderie from everyone working in the fields.  Thankfully, everyone was able to rise above the impossible drain of the heat waves and keep on keeping on.  By Friday we had those precious clouds all day (though not filled with nearly as much rain as we would have liked) and I was feeling the cumulative fatigue of countless 90+ degree days and relentless sun.   But with a spirit true to both farm crews this year, everyone rallied for a 3:30 power push, getting the last of our cauliflower planted in record time, all of us racing against our own exhaustion.  With a final burst of energy, we surged through the end of July together.

Notes From The Field: Push and Pull

The past week has been all about finding our harvest rhythm again and these smaller early harvests make it a bit easier for us to do that. Just like that, full days that can be dedicated to bed prep, transplanting, cultivating or greenhouse work are gone. Harvesting is rewarding work and this transition is a great one to be in the midst of, but it does take some more mental gymnastics and shifting of expectations to juggle all of the other work needed to ensure we have crops to harvest in 6, 12 or 20 weeks from now. Now that the CSA has begun, we'll be harvesting every morning, working together to get in tender greens before the heat sets in and hustling through the late morning to wrap things up by lunch. Time flies in the afternoon as we race to get in transplants, put plastic mulch down for another round of cucumbers or seed 30 trays of Swiss chard in the greenhouse. All throughout the mornings, I'm invigorated when I look out across a field to see weed crew extricating kale from giant amaranth or teasing tiny carrots away from just germinating lamb's quarters. They came out of the gates strong this past week and hand weeded or hoed roughly 10,000 row feet...
...in other words, they weeded... 
almost 2 miles of the farm!

Dan took advantage of the great cultivating weather we've had (hot, dry, windy) and zipped around killing weeds with the Super As, then took it down a few notches to flame weed the carrots, which is most effective when walking at a snail's pace. In the words of Robert Frost, we have many more miles (of weeding) to go this season, and your help would be such a boost if you can make it out to Crop Mob this Saturday. We're hoping for a critical mass of volunteers to make a big impact on our weed population, so come on out to the farm if you have some free time between 9am-noon this Saturday. Stay a little while after for some tasty snacks from Basil Tree catering. The difference that a few extra hands can make during the beginning of weed-bonanza season is tremendous and helps make our crops healthy and vigorous; it also helps our weed crew stay happy!

This week's share will have some beautiful red and green butterhead lettuce and Swiss chard, both of which we hope to have on the stand pretty consistently throughout the season. Garlic scapes and radishes will make their debut, and will be an option in your share the next couple of weeks. I'm a big fan of the chicory family and heads of frisee will be the first of a few crops from that family that we'll be harvesting over the coming weeks. (If you don't like it raw try it sautéed with garlic scapes, olive oil and balsamic vinegar.) Kale, bok choy and spinach will round things out. On the horizon we've got a few nice plantings of beets coming on, along with some very baby summer squash that should be ready for picking soon. Pick your own crops are coming along nicely and we'll see some more peas and herbs added to the list soon. For this week though, I hope you enjoy the quintessential taste of early CSA with the sugar snap peas. I also hope you'll find some stillness and solace in the quiet rows of green and coming abundance while you're out in the fields this week.

Notes From the Field - Las Plagas

Las Plagas. That's the phrase Dan and Erinn's old boss in California used to describe the travails of organic farming, and it's how Dan described all the pests and diseases to Hector when he started at our farm this spring. Little did we know how many of them we'd see in person this season.

Normally, we kind of lump las plagas together, since it's very difficult to know exactly what causes some of the problems we see in our crops on the farm without an official diagnosis from the lab at the University of Massachusetts. This season, however, we've been very fortunate to have Sue Scheufele, a vegetable specialist with UMass Extension, visiting every other week to take samples, check traps, and scout our crops in order to help us improve our organic production practices. This means that we know much more about the causes of the many pest and disease problems we've seen this season, and have a few more strategies for how to deal with them in upcoming seasons.

You've already heard in these notes about some of the major problems that Sue and other UMass specialists have helped us identify and create strategies for. Still, I thought I would run through a few of them in a little more detail for those of you keeping score at home. Here, in a nutshell, are some of the plagas that we've been dealing with at WFCF this season.

Late Blight: Its Latin name translates as "plant destroyer", and it was the cause of the Irish Potato Famine. This oomycete (not quite the same as a fungus) popped up from an unknown source in Eastern Massachusetts in late July this year. We have been spraying our big planting of field tomatoes at the Lyman Estate with a preventative combination of copper and bacterial and plant extracts, but we had left our PYO plants unsprayed to avoid the 24-hour break in harvesting that follows a spray application. It was a roll of the dice, and we got outsmarted by the disease this season. It appeared on August 9th in our cherry and plum tomatoes, and despite our efforts to contain it, spread to almost all of them by the 19th. While many organic growers, including us, tolerate some level of disease in our tomatoes, late blight is not one that we can live with. A few infected plants can create millions of spores that spread to other gardens and farms and destroy other crops and home harvests. So we don't let late blight stay on the farm, but do everything we can to destroy the plants and the disease as quickly as possible. Only one resistant variety of plum tomato (Plum Regal) and cherry tomato (Jasper) remain unaffected as of this writing, although we'll see what happens later in the season. What happens with late blight in the future? It's a good question. Right now it seems like a problem we're going to have to deal with each season, and something we need to think hard about how to manage in the future. We've already changed how we set up our tomato rows in order to facilitate spraying, and we are growing every resistant variety we can find. We need to continue to do research about how much spraying is really in the best interest of our soil and our health. We'll keep you updated!

Cucurbit Downy Mildew: When UMass entomologist Ruth Hazzard showed me the infected leaves, she said "this isn't your fault! This isn't your fault!" Downy mildew is a disease that blows in from the south every year and affects cucumbers and also, depending on the strain, other crops in the cucurbit family. It destroys plant leaves before fruit have a chance to mature, and can drastically shorten the harvest season for the crop. This year, downy mildew stopped our cucumber harvest this week, earlier than in previous seasons. As with late blight, about the only option available to an organic grower, besides the very important basics of growing a healthy plant in healthy soil, is regular applications of a preventative copper spray. This isn't something we've done for cucurbits in the past, but as with late blight, this disease isn't going to go away, and it's something we're going to need to be thinking about for the future. It's interesting to be facing two major crop diseases that aren't affected by crop rotation, since they can come in from off the farm each season. Stay tuned....

Basil Downy Mildew: Yes! Another new, destructive disease that appears to be here to stay! Basil downy mildew appeared in the United States in 2008, most likely from Uganda, according to researchers. Like late blight and curcurbit downy mildew, it spreads via wind-dispersed spores and makes its way through the country from areas where it overwinters each growing season. It causes yellowing of the lower leaves of the plant and eventually kills the crop, spreading from one succession to the next throughout the season. This is why we have been having you pull entire basil plants instead of picking sprigs, and why you may have noticed our basil crop looking a bit peaked this season. The solution? Yup, spray fungicides. There are a few organic fungicides that seem to be effective on this disease, and some types of basil, including Thai and red varieties, seem to be less affected. Still, here is another crop that used to be a sure thing, and one of the real joys of summer in New England like a beautiful ripe tomato or a crisp cucumber, that is now becoming more difficult to produce without the use of organic products from off the farm.

Flea Beetles: These have been around for a while, but have seemed particularly virulent this year. They are the tiny black beetles that hop around on crops in the brassica family, including kale, collards, broccoli, arugula, bok choy, broccoli raab, radish, and many more, putting tiny shot holes in the leaves of the crops and spreading diseases like Black Rot. This season they attacked our first planting of kale and collards so hard that, despite the fact that the plants were very healthy and well-nourished, they could not recover during the dry weather in July, and we had to take a break from these crops until our fall planting came on a couple of weeks ago. Our rutabaga crop, which we spent a great deal of time seeding in the greenhouse and transplanting in order to ensure that we'd actually get a crop this year, succumbed to black rot spread by flea beetles. We are monitoring our kale and collards, which are right across the farm road from the rutabaga, for the spread of the disease, which can also affect fall broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower. What can be done to protect crops? Resistant varieties are available, and clearly we're going to have to look into those; rotating fall brassicas away from spring brassicas actually does help with both flea beetles and the diseases they spread as well. But also, spraying pyganic to control the flea beetles, and to help control the disease, you guessed it, copper sprays. Plus they give the crop that nice patina. We haven't done any copper spraying in the brassicas yet, and we'll keep you posted.

Cucumber Beetle: This pest overwinters in the woods on the field edges and appears in the early cucumber and squash plantings. It gnaws on plants and fruit and spreads diseases (are you sensing a pattern here?) including bacterial wilt, which took down a good portion of our second cucumber planting this year. Again, resistant varieties help, as does rotating our cucurbit crop away from where it was the season before. We can also plant later successions away from earlier ones, although then we run into the larger rotational issue of having cucurbit family crops all over the farm. Here again, we have the final option of spraying pyganic, an organically approved but non-specific pesticide, if the population of beetles overwhelms our crop despite out best efforts. It's not a great option, but we did do it once this year.

Mexican Bean Beetle: This is a crop that can be particularly bad for organic growers with PYO bean crops who can't rotate beans to another field and plant small successions of beans over the course of the season. These are the copper-colored spotted beetles (related to ladybugs) and spiky yellow larvae that you have probably seen in the beans at some point this season. We've tried releasing pediobius wasps, a parasite of the bean beetle that lays its eggs in its larvae, but the progress that we are making there is hard to determine. We've done extensive scouting over the course of the season to determine the times when the pest is at its worst and spray pyganic, just before it looks like the population is about to explode. Again, it would be so much better if the biological control was effective, but we'll have to wait and see about that one.

Spotted Wing Drosophila (SWD): Several weeks ago, we started to spray the raspberries with spinosad, a compound made by bacteria that is approved for use in organic systems and is currently thought to be our best bet against the spotted wing drosophila. SWD was found in New England for the first time after Hurricane Irene, although it has been a pest in the South and Northwest for some time. It is unique among fruit flies in that it attacks sound fruit that is not overripe or damaged in any way, laying its eggs in the fruit and making it, although not harmful, definitely less palatable. In a survey this winter, you told us that you'd like to see us try to use every organic option at our disposal to save the berries, and so we are; turning in beds that weren't producing as well in order to consolidate our efforts, monitoring traps on the property to see when the population of SWD rises, and then spraying once a week for six weeks to see if we can get a crop that is relatively free of SWD larvae. So far, so good.

Weeds: Those of you who have been with us for a while (and who are still reading after all these plagas) may have noticed that the population of weeds on the farm was not as bad as it has been in the past. There are still a few trouble spots here and there, but by and large the weeds have not had the impact on our crops that they have had in previous seasons. This is partly a result of the very dry season, but partly a result of the incredible work done by this year's weed crew, who finished their official season with us last week. In various configurations, Alice, Sage, Eli, and Lizzie (seen below from left to right, with farmer Dan Roberts second from right) Ashley and Jesse hoed and weeded their way through nearly every crop on the farm. There's definitely a relief in the knowledge that with all these crazy pests and diseases popping up all over the farm, some of our biggest challenges can be solved on hands and knees, and with simple tools that have been around since before the industrial revolution. The difference they made is showing itself in our yields and in the quality of our produce. We are deeply grateful.

Notes from the Field: Weed Crew Thanks

This is the last week that our 2012 Weed Crew, Annabelle, Becca, Katie and Meghan, will be with us and the sadness I feel is deep and real. As some of you may have noticed, this can be a weedy place. We are dealing with a legacy "weed seed bank" whose size would make Citigroup blush (see: "Too big to fail"). Some three years ago we decided that it was necessary to add a four-person crew that would be responsible expressly for hand weed control. This crew spends five mornings a week for three of our weediest months on their hands and knees pulling, prying, wrenching, levering, sometimes hoeing and occasionally, virtually tweezing weeds from the soil. All so that our crops might thrive. They bring airflow to congested beds where disease may have flourished, access to light, so that tender plants don't have to reach and become leggy, and limit competition, so that plants becoming established have their nutritive needs satisfied. They are also the people on the farm that direct our drop in volunteers during the week. They act as ambassadors for the farm, explaining the tasks for the day, keeping people moving and motivated during hot, dry, cold and wet weather. They answer questions about the farm and organization, all while focused on the task at hand: Kill Weeds.


This is no small feat. It is work that can be redundant and can feel thankless, particularly if one loses sight of its importance. It can be very difficult to remember that this work, done as maintenance between transplant and harvest, so significantly impacts our yields, ease of harvest and overall efficiency, and therefore our CSA share at the stand and ultimately the food access work that we do in our community.

We have been fortunate to have three crews in a row that were all fantastic. But this year's crew has set the bar very high for all Weed Crews to follow.


This bunch has been all business from day one; nose down, bell to bell, efficient, team driven and fastidious. They don't posses the level of hate for our weeds that some in the past have (I'm looking at you Kenny...) but these four have been the model of incredible consistency, always ready to go in the morning, always up for the task, no matter how daunting, always with a smile and a quick inquiry about the work they'd be doing or what else was going on that day on the farm. They quickly learned every technique we taught and applied them thoughtfully, efficiently and briskly, but most of all thoroughly. This crew does clean work, I mean immaculate.

It is hard for me to actually believe that they have been with us now for eleven of their twelve weeks. It is more difficult for me to picture life without them. Annabelle, Becca, Katie and Meghan - I thank you personally for your season of hard work and the spirit with which you toiled. You will be missed. Really.

Notes from the Field: the Gratitude of Nothing Lacking

This one was a tough week.  It was hot, hot, hot, and dry, dry, dry.  The lettuce, in an unirrigated field, turned bitter and went to flower.  Our storage onions, in the same field, don't seem to be amounting to anything but big scallions.  The beets, kale, and napa cabbage just sat there, seemingly getting smaller.  It was difficult for the weed crew to weed, since the crops wilted as they pulled the weeds out from among the plants.  It was difficult to transplant, since even our robust Brussels sprout and cauliflower transplants wilted as soon as they touched the powdery-dry, 100+ degree soil. 

We sweated all day, every day, in the rain boots we were wearing so that we wouldn't get our feet soaked by the irrigation.  The disease we found in the pick-your-own tomato plants was confirmed to be late blight, so overhead watering the tomato and tomatillo patches was out of the question, as water spreads the disease.  We watched tomatilloes and beans, planted between rows of tomatoes, shrivel up as the week went on.  The field crew moved pipe, flushed pipe, irrigated, moved pipe again, up and down the fields, all day long.  We had to irrigate empty fields in order to help the previous crop residue decompose so that we could plant a second crop there.  We drip irrigated sweet potatoes and field tomatoes, eggplant and cucumbers and peppers, for literally days at a time.  I spent most of one day on the tractor, spraying copper on the tomatoes to try to protect them from late blight, racing the thunderstorms that finally delivered an inch of rain to us on Wednesday night.

Meanwhile, we picked thousands of pounds of squash and cucumbers from our new field at Gateways Farm in Weston.  Our outreach market, which provides organic produce to low-income community members for free with a voucher or for $5 a bag, opened on Tuesday evening.  It was very well attended despite its move to a shady new location; Dan, Sutton, Katie and Martha distributed over 70 bags of produce in one two-hour session.  Our garlic dried down beautifully in the greenhouse, with no sign of mold or disease.  The tomatoes kept growing, kept flowering, and began, slowly, to set fruit and ripen.  We fertilized, irrigated, and hoed the kale and Swiss chard, and they began to slowly rebound.  By Friday morning, after a week of work and an inch of rain, the color and texture of the plants was completely different.  The field crew planted thousands of scallions, broccoli, cabbage, beets, lettuce, fennel and kohlrabi for fall harvest.  We seeded more cilantro, dill, and a round of edamame for harvest around Labor Day.  There was no sign of the Spotted Wing Drosophila (yet) as our raspberries began the run up to their autumn harvest.

Most of the time, when things are going well on the farm, we don't mind working hard.  We are grateful for the chance to do work we love, work with a purpose and a result that can be measured in pounds, row feet, the beauty of a working landscape that we know like the backs of our dirty hands.  When things are not going well, on the other hand, this work can feel like that classic definition of insanity -- doing the same thing over and over while expecting a different result.  Irrigating again, despite the crops that keep wilting.  Spraying the tomatoes again, knowing that the best tools in our organic belt really only give us about two weeks of additional harvest time once late blight takes hold.  Praying for rain for the crops.  Praying for no rain for the tomatoes.  Trying to remember that there are other crops on the farm besides tomatoes.  Trying to remember that there are other tasks on the farm besides weeding.  Continuing to do hard physical work in uncomfortable conditions, wondering why we didn't get a real job in a climate-controlled environment. 

Using our brains and our bodies as hard as we know how, doing our best to work with nature instead of opposing it, even as the rules that we once counted on seem to be changing, can feel a little crazy when the rewards are so uncertain.  After all this -- planting and fertilizing and staking and tying and tying again and watering and fertilizing and spraying and spraying and spraying -- we still might not get any tomatoes.  We might lose a crop -- or more than one -- in the field that desperately needs some irrigation next season.  We might not quite be able to keep up with the weeds despite all of our efforts.  These losses, like our successes, can be counted in pounds, row feet, sleepless nights, empty hands.  They can gnaw at you if you let them.  They can whittle away at your endurance until you are numb, unmotivated, uninspired, thinking about that real job.  That job job.  

After the rain last Wednesday night and a long day of harvesting and distributing food on Thursday, I had a moment of remembering how to feel the gratitude that, most days, keeps me going.  It was a perfect summer evening, with a few shareholders still wandering through the beans and basil.  There was plenty of food in the fields.  There was a little moisture in the soil, a bouquet of flowers on the table, a chance to stop and take a breath and drink it in before I raced home to my waiting children.  There it was -- nothing lacking.  Nothing wanting.  Not everything in its place, the way I would want it -- nature is too wild and unpredictable for that.  But everything in its place, the way it is.  And us -- us in our place too.

Notes from the Field: Weeds

This is the time of year when the weeds on our farm make themselves well known. In the heat of July, amaranth, lambs' quarter, galinsoga, purslane, and assorted grasses grow at seemingly impossible rates, trying to go to flower and set seed like the rest of the natural world. Seeing this phenomenon, a Korean friend of ours once shook her head, grabbed Erinn by the arm, and demonstrated weeding to her, nodding vigorously. If we would just weed, she was saying, everything would be OK. 

The truth is, of course, we do weed. A lot. Waltham Fields is blessed with a particularly abundant weed seed bank. Our fields were essentially abandoned for a few years in the early 1990s as the University of Massachusetts, who owns our land, transferred most of its agricultural research to Amherst. During this time, weeds grew crazily in the fertile soil, dropping their seeds to the ground to germinate and grow over the next decade. When Oakes Plimpton, WFCF's founder, took over the fields, he initially farmed with only a small crew of volunteers, making it challenging to keep up with all those weeds -- more weeds, more weed seed. I came to WFCF from a farm where we used hoes to try to keep up with our weeds, so my knowledge of weed control methods was less than subtle, and less than effective -- more weeds, more weed seed. The old adage "one year of seed, seven years of weeds" is a very rough estimate, but given our history, we're looking at about 70 years of pretty intense weeds on our farm.

These days, we control weeds in a number of different ways. Our first line of defense is creating what's called a "stale seedbed". We make a bed a week or two before we plan to plant a crop and kill the weeds that sprout there, hopefully a couple of times, before we plant seeds or transplants. If we do a good job killing the weeds without disturbing the soil enough to bring up new weed seeds, this technique ensures that our crop is slightly ahead of the weeds when it sprouts or when we put it into the ground as a transplant. This helps, but it's not enough on our farm. We are fortunate enough to have three cultivating tractors, two Farmall Super As from the late 1940s and a Kubota 245H, a relative spring chicken from the mid 1980s. These tractors have attachments that kill weeds (each sold separately, and some assembly required). The construction of the tractor chassis on a cultivating tractor means that the attachments can either mount just below the driver's seat where you can see the work that you're doing, or behind the driver where you can look forward and have faith. Both types of attachments could warrant their own field notes -- our basket weeders are good for killing weeds in between the rows of crops when the crops are very small, while the tine weeder can actually weed around the crop that's already in the bed once it's established. Ominous sounding pieces of steel like the flex-tine cultivators, torsion weeders, and rolling spiders all have their places in our toolbox of tractor-mounted weed control equipment. The I & J pathway cultivator, new to the farm this year, is a major improvement in helping control weeds in the pathways of the crops we grow on plastic. Killing weeds with a tractor is called "cultivation" -- it's the step before what most people traditionally think of as weeding, the quick and dirty, and sometimes extremely effective, method of moving the soil just enough to dislodge tiny weeds, almost before you can see them, and expose them to the sun and wind while (hopefully) not affecting the crop you plan to grow.

We also cultivate with a strange-looking tool called a flame weeder, a propane tank mounted on a backpack frame that delivers a blast of heat to just-sprouted weeds, exploding their cell walls. This technique, called "flame weeding" is essentially a kind of stale seed bedding that we can do after we have planted seeds in the bed already. Ideally, for example we seed carrots, wait a week, and flame to kill any weeds that are germinating in the bed the day before the carrot plants break through the soil (some of us think the heat helps the carrots sprout, too). We might kill a few early-sprouting carrots, but it is so worth that small loss in terms of time saving later that flame weeding has become an essential part of our carrot-growing regimen at WFCF.

After all this equipment rolls through the field, we still have weeds. They are either weeds we missed, or new ones that germinated after the crop was too large to cultivate with the tractor. Some of these weeds are easily controlled with hoes (we like both colinear and scuffle hoes on our farm, depending on the job and the person), but some need the ultimate treatment -- the weed crew. The 2012 weed crew consists of four women, 20 hours per week, often joined by additional drop-in volunteers. On Mondays, they tackle whatever is most urgent in the pick-your-own field. Tuesday through Friday, they work on the rest of the farm. Not every crop needs to be hand-weeded; if we're lucky, we can usually get lettuce to the harvest stage with just a quick hoeing. Every planting of carrots, however, needs one hand weeding pass through in order to clean up the weeds that are right in the row and don't get killed by the cultivator; our parsnips, which are in the ground from May through mid-October, may actually need more than one. The weed crew makes their way around the whole farm over the course of the 12 weeks, from June through August, that they spend with us. The work that they do is some of the most important work that gets done here, hands down. The other person who does invaluable -- and unsung -- work to keep our weed population down these days is Fred, who mows and weed whacks our field edges once a week. Not only does this bring us incredible peace of mind and add to the beauty and tranquility of the fields, but it also keeps the weeds on the field edge from going to seed, adding to that tremendous weed seed bank of old.

We know that many of the weeds on the farm are not only edible, but very nutritious. Purslane is a rare plant source of omega-3 fatty acids, while lambs' quarters, a relative of spinach, packs all of that favorite green's nutritional punch. Vegetable amaranth is a favorite food of Jamaicans, who steam it and eat it with white rice and fish. They're all delicious -- you should take some home and try them. How about a car full?

And we also know that there are folks who say that changing the mineral or biological balance in our soil may also change the weed population. While we continue to work on this from year to year, particularly through the addition of micronutrient blends and humates, we're definitely not there yet, and it's possible that our giant historic weed seed bank is simply too large for us to really see the effects of the fertility changes we've been making. Amaranth, for example, really seems to like to grow right where all of our vegetable crops grow, and it seems like it is encouraged -- not deterred --  as we increase the fertility of the soil. Of course, our crops are also growing better too, and with the help of some institutional knowledge, improved cultivation equipment, better fertility, and the weed crew, our farm is slowly growing more productive and less weedy. It's an uphill climb, but we are making progress each year. So yes, we do weed. All the time.
